Growing Your Own Food At Home!
Updated: Apr 10
Presently food growth, and specifically sustainable food growth, is a hot topic. It has been hard not to notice, when walking into a supermarket in the last few weeks, the often bare fresh produce sections. Supermarket workers are going around the clock trying to restock but it has made everyone more acutely aware of where their food comes from and what the implications will be if it is not readily available. We have long relied, without a second thought, on being able to walk into a supermarket and grab what we feel like, at any time of the day or night. But recent times, with the global crisis of Covid-19, have shown us that this is a more fragile concept than we once thought.
So what other options do we have to provide our families with good quality, available, renewable food? Growing at home is a great option. Developing garden beds and growing our own produce gives us accountability and access to fresh and delicious produce without even needing to leave our homes. One step further to this, is the use of hydroponics for food growth.
Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in water based, nutrient rich solution without the use of soil and it is something you can do at home. The main benefits of hydroponics is that it uses up to 90% less water than traditional growing, with water being one of our most precious commodities. Growth production is 5 -10 times greater in the same area size. Crops grow up to 2 times faster than traditional ways. Decreased use of chemical herbicides or pesticides. Plus many more benefits.
Urban Green Farms has a range of products to suit all families, individuals and companies to grow their own produce. From smaller systems on the kitchen bench to allow you to add your own herbs to your cooking to larger outdoor set ups to feed your family to corporate systems so restaurants/cafes/schools can grow their own foods for use in their premises.
