Go Beneath the Surface: Two New Free Soil Biology Courses Are Now Live
Most of us spend a lot of time thinking about what is growing above the ground.
The leaves. The flowers. The vegetables. The crop.
But some of the most important activity is happening where we cannot see it.
Bacteria are transforming nutrients. Fungi are extending through the soil. Roots are releasing carbon compounds into the rhizosphere. Organic matter is breaking down. Nutrients are cycling. Water and oxygen are moving through pore spaces.
Soil is not simply something plants sit in, it is a living system.
That is why Urban Green Farms has expanded our free online education program with two new soil biology courses — one designed for younger learners and another that goes much deeper into the science of the living soil.
And both are completely free.

Introducing Soil Detectives: Discovering the Living World Beneath Our Feet
For younger students, families, teachers and schools, we have created:
Soil Detectives: Discovering the Living World Beneath Our Feet
This course introduces students to soil biology in a practical and easy-to-understand way.
Rather than treating soil as “dirt”, students begin exploring what soil is actually made of and the huge range of organisms and processes taking place beneath their feet.
Students investigate topics including:
what soil is made from
bacteria and fungi
the soil food web
roots and the rhizosphere
organic matter
nutrient cycling
what healthy soil looks like
how scientists investigate soil
There are also practical activities that encourage students to observe and investigate real soil.
It is particularly suited to primary and junior secondary students, gardening clubs, sustainability programs, homeschoolers and families wanting a practical STEM activity.

Ready to Go Deeper? Meet the Soil Biology Masterclass
We have also launched a much more advanced course:
Soil Biology Masterclass: Understanding the Living Soil
This is not just a gardening course.
It is a detailed introduction to the biology, chemistry and physical processes that determine how soil functions.
Across 12 modules, learners work through:
1. Introduction to the Living Soil
Understand soil as an interconnected physical, chemical and biological system.
2. The Soil Food Web
Explore how bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, arthropods and larger soil organisms interact.
3. Bacteria, Fungi & Microbial Communities
Learn the difference between microbial biomass, microbial activity, diversity and actual biological function.
4. The Rhizosphere & Root–Microbe Relationships
Explore one of the most active parts of the soil ecosystem — the narrow zone surrounding plant roots.
5. Organic Matter & Soil Carbon
Understand labile carbon, particulate organic matter, microbial residues and longer-term carbon stabilisation.
6. Nutrient Cycling
Follow nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur and other nutrients through biological and chemical pathways.
7. Soil Structure, Aggregation & Water
Understand how soil structure affects infiltration, drainage, oxygen, rooting and water availability.
8. pH, EC & the Soil Environment
Explore acidity, alkalinity, salinity, sodicity, oxygen and the environmental conditions controlling biological activity.
9. Soil Biology, Plant Health & Stress
Look at root health, disease, drought, waterlogging, salinity and multiple interacting stresses.
10. Measuring & Interpreting Soil Health
Learn how to interpret soil tests, microbial biomass, respiration, enzyme activity, DNA testing and other biological indicators.
11. Managing Soil Biology
Explore rotations, living roots, residues, organic amendments, biological products, irrigation and nutrient management.
12. Research, Evidence & Soil Health Investigation
Learn how controls, replication, experimental design and statistics determine what soil research can — and cannot — prove.
The final module even teaches learners how to design their own soil health investigation.
Who Is the Masterclass For?
We originally built the course with education in mind, but it quickly became obvious that its usefulness goes well beyond the classroom.
It is suitable for:
secondary school students
agriculture and STEM classes
TAFE students
teachers
growers
gardeners
agronomists
land managers
people interested in regenerative agriculture
anyone wanting to properly understand soil health
No previous microbiology degree required. The course starts with the fundamentals and progressively builds into more advanced soil science.
Why We Built These Courses Now
There is growing interest in soil health, biological agriculture and the soil microbiome.
That is a positive development, but it has also created a lot of very simplified claims.
You will regularly hear things like:
“More microbes mean healthier soil.”
“Fungi are always better.”
“Higher respiration means better soil.”
“This product unlocks nutrients.”
“This treatment builds carbon.”
Sometimes there may be useful science behind those statements, sometimes the evidence is much more complicated.
One of the central principles we teach throughout the Masterclass is: More microbes does not automatically mean healthier soil.
The important question is what those organisms are doing.
A soil can contain large microbial populations while still suffering from compaction, poor nutrient availability, salinity, waterlogging or restricted roots.
Good soil science therefore looks at the whole system.
Learning How to Read Soil Research
One of the features we are most pleased with is that the Masterclass does not simply tell students what to believe. It teaches them how to evaluate evidence.
Students learn to ask:
What exactly was measured?
Was there a control?
Was the experiment replicated?
How much did the result change?
Was the difference statistically meaningful?
Does the measurement actually support the claim being made?
Could something else explain the result?
That is particularly important as biological soil products and soil-health claims become increasingly common. Understanding soil biology should make people better at asking questions — not simply more willing to accept claims.
Connecting Education With Real Australian Soil Research
The timing of these courses is deliberate.
Urban Green Farms has been closely following and supporting new research into soil biology and biological soil inputs.
As new Australian research becomes publicly available, we plan to progressively integrate real research examples into the courses.
That will include things such as:
real experimental designs
treatment and control comparisons
soil enzyme data
carbon measurements
biological indicators
graphs from published research
plain-English interpretation of results
examples of what a study proves — and what it does not
For advanced students, this will create an opportunity to move beyond textbook examples and work with real Australian soil research.
For younger students, the same science can be translated into simpler activities showing how researchers investigate the living world beneath our feet.
From Aquaponics and Hydroponics to Soil Science
Urban Green Farms has spent years helping schools, families and growers understand sustainable food production through hydroponics and aquaponics. Adding soil biology was a natural next step.
Together, our free courses now allow learners to explore three major growing systems:
Aquaponics — plants, fish and biological filtration working together.
Hydroponics — plants growing with precisely managed water and nutrients.
Soil Biology — plants interacting with one of the most complex biological systems on Earth.
For schools, this creates opportunities to connect biology, chemistry, agriculture, sustainability and environmental science across multiple learning projects.
The Best Part? They’re Free.
We want these resources to be used.
By teachers.
By students.
By parents.
By growers.
By people who have suddenly realised there is an entire ecosystem operating underneath their vegetable patch.
Both of the new soil courses are available free through the Urban Green Farms Online Courses platform.

Whether you start with Soil Detectives or jump straight into the Soil Biology Masterclass, there is one thing we hope you take away:
The more you understand what is happening below the ground, the better your decisions above it can become.
