How long does COVID-19 live on surfaces?
A recent article by the University of California, suggests the length of time the COVID-19 virus lasts outside the body is longer than first estimated. Although no definitive timeframes have been stated, due to the independent variables of heat, sunlight, moisture etc, the time frame is from hours to several days.
The study showed that the corona virus can be detectable for;
Up to three hours in aerosols, after an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Up to 24hrs on cardboard (grocery products, office materials etc)
Up to 3days on stainless steel (door handles, elevator buttons, cutlery etc)
Up to 3days on plastic (furniture, shared computers, cars, clothing buttons etc)
Unclear on woven materials- (clothing, bedding, carseats etc)
This suggests that we need to show caution, not only with person to person contact, but also with touching the world around us. The transfer of this virus through relatively casual contact with objects makes this COVID-19 pandemic very difficult to contain and predict.
