Children and Corona Virus
Luckily COVID-19 seems to affect children much less severely than adults. The virus doesn’t discriminate who it infects, with children theoretically just as susceptible to infection as adults, but the severity of the symptoms and the complications arising from the virus are far lower. But we still need to protect our children from infection for their own comfort but also for the protection of the adults and elderly in our community.
In children the symptoms range from no symptoms at all to a mild flu-like illness. Sore throat, dry cough, fever, runny nose, tried and in extreme cases difficulty breathing (unlikely in children). With an incubation period of 1-14 days, symptoms may presents anytime in the 14days after exposure, during this period children are at risk of passing along the disease to other people they are in contact with.
It is also important to continue with your children's normal medical needs. This may include vaccinations, regular medications, medical appointments or therapies. A healthy child is most likely to be able to fight the virus and have minimal symptoms.
Hand hygiene is vital for children to stay healthy during this time and to not pass along infections to other more vulnerable members of society. Simple hand washing with soap and water is effective, if you can get your children to properly wash for 20seconds under running water- more difficult than it sounds. Non-alcohol based hand sanitisers, like SIQURA from
Urban Green Farms, are a great alternatives for children, as they aren’t drying to their fragile skin and offer up to 24hrs additional protection. Hand sanitisation is important for children after sneezing, coughing, blowing their nose, before and after eating and after toileting. A quick spray of SIQURA and allowing it to dry kills 99.99% of the germs on children’s hands, and continues to kill the microbes for 2hrs.
